Kalidas Jethabhai House & Mukhi Delu - CEPT Professional Program (CPP) on ‘Wooden Heritage Conservation’
The Center for Heritage Conservation (CHC) at the CEPT Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) and CEPT Professional Programs (CPP) conducted a 3-day certificate program on ‘Wooden Heritage Conservation’ from January 19th to 21st, 2024.
India has a vast repository of wooden built heritage across varied geographic regions. This certificate program introduced its participants to conservation approaches for wooden heritage, which formed integral and important cultural components of historic built environments.
The program was held at the CEPT University campus in Ahmedabad and at the CEPT Conservation Site School at Kalidas Jethabhai House and Mukhi Delu in Dharmaj, Gujarat. The program was designed to offer participants hands-on engagement with wooden conservation techniques, supplemented with theoretical sessions led by experts and practitioners. The content of the program was tailored for professionals, teachers, and researchers in architectural conservation, heritage management, architecture, design, civil and structural engineering, or any other field allied to built-environment studies and heritage studies. The program tutors included Nigar Shaikh, Prof. Jigna Desai, Ashna Patel, and Saatvika Pancholi. The guest experts were Fulchand Suthar, Mehul Shah, Khushi Shah, and Dr. Benny Kuriakose. The tutors were supported by teaching associate Komal Gandhi.
The program was supported by material from CHC’s ongoing work for the Endangered Wooden Architecture Programme (EWAP) Grant, hosted by Oxford Brookes University. On-site support was provided by the Avichal Heritage Foundation, Kalidas Jethabhai House, Dharmaj, and Audrey Alvares. The program was developed and curated by CHC, CRDF in consultation with CPP. The program content curators were Prof. Jigna Desai, Jayashree Bardhan, Nigar Shaikh, and Ashna Patel.
